Is the Spyderco Assist Salt a rescue tool, an EDC knife, a survival multitool or a piece of rafting gear? Well, it could be all of those things. The Assist Salt features one large 3 ¾-inch locking blade. That blade has rip-through-anything serrations except for the first ¾-inch near the tip where it has a plain edge. And that tip is more blunt than a butter knife. So, it would be great for rescue work in cutting away seat belts, clothing and the like without as much of a risk of inflicting another injury to the accident victim.

Spyderco Assist Salt a Good EDC Knife Too

But that blade is fashioned from H1 steel that’s just about impervious to corrosion. So, it would be a natural for rafters, divers, kayakers, saltwater fishermen, anyone who spends time around water and wants a knife, but not a pointy blade that might puncture inflatables.

You can cut cord with this knife by placing it between the blade and handle.

A nice feature of this knife is that you can place rope or cord between the blade and handle for a scissor-like cut.

A Rescue Tool with Hidden Features

The blade has finger grooves on the spine, but they’re not there to be fashionable. You can put your fingers atop those grooves and turn this knife into unique, scissor-like cutting tool. You place a rope or cord to be cut between the blade and the handle, take a grip and squeeze. It’s like a cigar cutter for rope and it  works great.

Use those same finger grooves on the spine to squeeze the blade against the handle when the knife is closed and a retractable carbide glass breaker pokes out of the butt end. So, it’s exposed when you need it, but it’s recessed and won’t poke you otherwise.

The knife features a glass breaker.

Squeezing the closed blade allows the carbide glass breaker to poke out through the back of the handle.

Need Help? Give a Little Whistle

To give it extra utility, there’s even an integral survival whistle in the yellow, fiberglass-reinforced nylon handle. That handle features Spyderco’s Bi-Directional Texture pattern for a secure grip even with wet, cold hands. And because it’s bright yellow, you’re not apt to lose it if you set it down. Naturally, as a Spyderco folder, it comes the company’s Trademark Round Hole on the blade for easy one-handed opening. The knife comes with a reversible wire pocket clip for tip-up carry too. This is a knife you’ll want to keep close just in case.
